On my bathroom vanity I have a small ceramic
sign that's propped up by tower of special rocks that I purchased a number of
years ago which reads "Celebrate Life." I bought it to remind me to
take joy in the everyday simple pleasures. So many times I find myself living
in my head - thinking of what I need to do next, what will I write about in my
monthly e-zine, how are my kids doing, what's my granddaughter up to, or the
old self critic tape that keeps up an endless chatter of Am I doing the right
thing?, do people find value in what I do? Am I making a difference? Yada,
yada, yada, instead of seeing this precious miraculous moment for what it is- a
miracle of breath, life and a connection to the Divine.
The other evening I was listening to call on a
topic I had an interest in and my husband knocked on my office door and
whispered "There's a double rainbow in the sky."
I had some choices here. I could have stayed
listening to the call and said thanks to my husband for letting me know or I
could get up and go outside to see this double rainbow.
I choose to see the rainbows. One because I
love rainbows, two it was a double rainbow three my husband made an effort to
let me know about it and four- that is what life is about- sharing, celebrating
the wonders of nature, connecting. A bonus was that as we were watching the
rainbow strengthen and then fade we received "sky kisses" from a
cloud above our house. I have to go back to my calendar to remember what call I
was on yet the rainbow experience continues with me as does the feeling of
wonder and quiet joy it evoked.
Even in the midst of chaos and grief, there is
usually a moment that evokes joy. The challenge is in "seeing" it and
receiving it. These little life celebrations provide a pause or a pattern
interrupt to bring you back to your spirit and authentic present self.
I'm not saying that this easy yet it's simple.
It takes practice to bridge the pleasure gap.
Sometimes focusing on dissatisfaction becomes
a comfortable lifestyle and actually takes more energy to maintain than one of
celebrating the nuggets of daily life.
People seem to look at life's big moments or
occasions as the only ones worthy of celebrating thus dismissing the potential
for joy on a daily basis. This creates a disconnect between the bulk of your
daily life and the extraordinary events in your life making life seem like a
burden in between the highlights.
Bridging this gap is not indicating indulgence in physical desires but a deeper sense of peace, contentment - One that comes from a profound appreciation of the here and now. This is a conscious choice to celebrate life and be mindful of the now.
"There is only one minute in which you
are alive,
this minute, here and now.
this minute, here and now.
The only way to live is by accepting each
minute as an unrepeatable miracle.
Which is exactly what it is- a miracle and unrepeatable."
